Why is there a character limit? I spent 8 hours entering information for my bar exam, and was ready to take my first quiz, when I realized the "red font" indicates that while one can keep writing, it will not show up on a quiz or on my phone. Why even let a user go past 150 in the first place??
This seems to be a basic functionality that your site lacks. We can't even lower the font size. Seriously? Studyblue is the prettiest, but I'm going with studydroid now, after I waste another 2 hours cutting and pasting

Regarding the character limit, I think you should make it an option to have a limit or not, and then pop up a warning message suggesting users to keep the limit for more efficient studying, however they should still have an option to remove the character limit.

With so many people asking for this feature, wouldn't it just be best to change it? If I wanted to study hanging from the roof by my ankles, I shouldn't be stopped just because most people like to study at a desk. Similar concept here. What works best for Linda ("efficient and effective") isn't necessarily what works best for Jim Halpert. If StudyBlue were a smart company they would remove the character limit, that way those who need more space are happy, and those who don't are too.
Give your users what they want, it's good business. -
Linda,
It I need to memorize certain portions of arguments that become more confusing when I split them up. Please let the user make the decision on how many characters they should put in their flashcards. -
Umm, I didnt even go over the character limit and all my information isn't showing up on the notecard. I can't lower the font to make it fit so right now I'm just learning 80% of the information. Great. Wish I'd known so I didn't have to spend an hour typing up flashcards that will only get me a B.

Jim,
Sorry for the trouble. The reason for the character limit is to make your studying more efficient and effective. We have found that breaking up the content into smaller chunks and many different cards is better for those purposes.
That being said, the notification for when you are over the limit and how that affects your mobile viewing and quizzing should be more apparent. This is something we are aware of and are working to fix.
Sorry to lose you as a user, but I do appreciate you taking the time to comment and allowing us the chance to respond.

I thought I was the only one who was frustrated from the character limit...Please remove the character limit from the definition section of the flashcards, and add a scrollbar to the mobile app. That would just about make this product superior to any other!

I asked for this nearly a year ago and have seen many additional responses also asking for it. I am surprised, and frankly disappointed, that nothing has been done to fix the issue over the last year. Now, rather than saying, "we are looking into it" we are being told the limitation is there for a purpose. This says a lot about StudyBlue as a company and its support that it is trying to say a limitation is actually a benefit.
This is a core issue to studying and in using StudyBlue. I truly hope that this issue can be resolved in a prompt manner. -

listen um whatever your name is but i think that this website is very helpful and you shouldnt judge it. its easy, simple and has really helped me and my friends. so mayber you should try and give it a chance sorry but putting that down is just so i don't know judgemental. sorry but that is just what i think. no hard feelings

ashley.. you are an idiot .... linda.. the customer is always right .... you shouldnt care about how we actually do you should just care about what we think of your site... sure, long term, being able to show that your customers did well on tests is great for your reputation. But as of right now me getting an A on my next test will NOT increase your profits. think short term and make your customers happy... like has been said, it is simply good business

Actually, I too am very disappointed with the character limit and will now have to RETYPE ALL MY FLASHCARDS on some other provider.
Although I agree that typically less is more on study cards; alternate study methods can make use of longer materials for non-traditional studies.
SUCH AS, I am a student studying for the GRE and with the new format changes, it is quite clear the BEST way to study for the new GRE vocab is to be able to identify vocab in context.
As a result, the best method would be to write a sentence/paragraph on the front side using the word and bolding it, and than the definition on the backside. However, with these ridiculous limits I am unable to do that.
Likewise, I wish to have the word on the front and the definition the back, WITH A EXAMPLE of the definition in use in a gre-like text. Unfortunately for me, GRE-like text is a few sentences long, and thus I am UNABLE to type out examples.
Study blue is great for someone in 4-8th grade who needs to memorize vocab or simple definitions, but anyone who is trying to really engage their minds and wants to use flash cards to their full intent should look elsewhere before they get as frustrated as I have with this program.
Very disappointed. -

I completely agree. I am a med student and would like to be able to describe mechanisms. There are a lot more use for flashards than intro language and basic concepts. I too will now have to leave Study Blue. I was so hopeful when I found this site. Otherwise, very nice interface...

Study Blue is fantastic, but the character limit is frustrating. The purpose of StudyBlue is more effective studying, which varies by user and by the content. Why in the world would you limit how such a powerful tool could be used? Doesn't make sense.

Okay so I just saw the character limit..and it's definitely something that should be changed.
I get the idea of efficiency and effectiveness, but at least make it an option! -

I also would like an increase in character limit! It totally depends on the course you are in. I'm a vet student and my flashcards do not fit into your character limit sometimes
-
-
I also found the character limit frustrating!!!
As a history student, attempting to type out accomplishments of certain significant individuals while keeping to the character limit is very frustrating. I can't fit all the info. even when I use short hand (I swear I've abbreviated everything so much, it's ridiculous). I hope that the limit is increased soon; if not, I will have to hunt for another site. :(
It really is a nice interface... -

What are the red numbers (negative) on the flashcards when i go over 250 characters? Does that mean the extra characters are not saved?

I am spending more time making my flash cards contain fewer than 250 characters than I am studying. This is highly unproductive

I agree with everyone, let there be an option for law, med, vet etc.to choose a larger character limit

I would have assumed the character limit was to make things easier on StudyBlue.
They don't have to program their flash cards to change font size, or grow to fit the extra text. It also allows them to save smaller files for each flashcard on their servers (a service that we users don't nec. pay for).
I agree that it would be great to have no character limit, but I would compromise, and say just a larger character limit. You don't want someone uploading a flashcard of their entire course materials and totally lagging out the system.
I think it's arrogant to claim that SB is somehow helping students study more effectively by having the limit. I find sometimes more really is more, and I think the case for a larger limit has been made effectively by users.-
I really doubt BYTE-sized information would lag out a system. If it did, then StudyBlue should be upgrading to a more reliable server. This is getting ridiculous. 272 LIKES! Do something already! What is this "under consideration" nonsense?!

I understand that there is a limit for printing purposes, but I think that it confines the work room too much. I wish that that the length would be significantly longer. If it is a choice, then everyone can be happy. Especially as a tutor, I would love to be able to utilize the 'flash cards' for help with possible essay questions as well; an extended length would definitely help create this possibility!

Why hasn't this been changed yet? I'm about to switch to another provider because I'm starting to think you guys aren't listening to the demands. 272 LIKES for this already and it's still "under consideration." Are you kidding me?! Just change it already for crying out loud. PEOPLE NEED TO STUDY!

Hi Johnny,
There are many technical demands and layout issues that come with removing a character limit. It is not a matter of not listening to our users. We appreciate feedback from users like yourself and take it very seriously. It is simply a matter of deciding whether of not this is something we can afford to do. The team here at StudyBlue is working on it and we will surly post onto this feed if the character limit ever becomes optional or ceases to exist.
That being said, I hope StudyBlue as it exists today continues to be of use to you.
Best,
Richard-
was going to buy it but limit stopped me......looks like you cant afford to not do it! Get on it or someone else will......maybe me.

I think that you should allow the vocab cards longer entries. I'm using them to study for history and it would help if I could put more details on the cards.

I have some flashcards with long definitions (characters maxed out) but when I try to flip through them they get cut off. The long defs are fine in review-sheet form, just not in flashcard form. Is there anyway to scroll through long definitions without splitting them up into multiple cards?
Thanks!

I agree completely. I just got a StudyBlue account and I was very happy with it, so I spent a ton of time making flashcards for an exam in a higher level class. I didn't notice the word limit, so I went over it on almost every card. Now I have to transfer my flashcards to another platform. I'm disappointed because StudyBlue seemed like a great website. Please removed the character limit.

Character Limit Workaround:
I hope they don't "fix" this workaround, but it works and flashcards with long definitions, etc show up just fine in my experience.
Anyway, if you write out your cards in a two column spread sheet and then upload it to Study Blue the flashcards that are generated will ignore the limits, but if you edit a card that you uploaded by this method you may get the character limit error again for that card.
Hope that helps, its been working well for me for a while now -

I need more space on the Flash Cards! Its very difficult to put all the points of a particular case on the space given and it breaks the flow if I break it up.

I'm confused why you would allow people to go into the red characters if they then weren't going to be able to use the flashcards they spent so long making. I don't have time to rewrite out my cards by hand or on another platform, and I feel very frustrated that your assumption of whats best for my studying has put me it a tight spot.
Please consider removing the character limit. For those of us who use your site for higher education, it's unfair that we're limited by what we can see because you assume smaller chunks is a more efficient way of studying.
Thank you.
