Quiz By Definition First, Not Term

When taking a quiz, it would make more sense to have the "type my answer" type of questions in the reverse order. It get a little tricky to nail the exact wording of some definitions. Instead, have the definition come up with a slot for us to type in the word that corresponds with that definition.

  • Hi, Rachel,

I can understand where you are coming from with this suggestion. When definitions get a little more lengthy, it can be difficult to nail them exactly in the "Type My Answer" mode. We try to encourage users to be concise with the kind of "Terms" and "Definitions" they use (as evident by the character limit we place on flashcards) because when you are as clear and to the point with study materials it is easier to recall them.

Exceptions do exist though, and maybe it would be worth considering an option to choose whether you would want the "Definition first" or "Term first" on quizzes like we do when studying in "Flashcards" mode. Do you think something like that would be helpful for you?

    Best,
    Katie

This would be extremely valuable in foreign language study. I have to eventually test whether or not the students can correctly identify the words going from English into German. Along with that is whether or not they can produce the definite article in the correct gender. When might we see something like this?
    • Hi Peter,

I can definitely see how this would be valuable when considering foreign language study. It might be worth pointing out that we do give the option of studying by either the 'Term' or 'Definition' side first when studying material as flashcards. When selecting a deck and choosing 'Study Now', the option to change which side to study first will be located along the left hand side of the page.

In terms of when to expect these options in quizzes, I cannot say for certain. We have a major site update planned for release within the next few weeks or so and once that is done we will be able to being evaluating new things to tackle. Updating quiz features is definitely something we see value in however so I can provide more information as it becomes available.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or comments.

      Best,
      Katie

Is there any way to separate definitions from an example? I like to have the examples when I'm doing just the flashcards, but when I take the quizzes, it gives away the answers. (I suppose this could double as an idea too.)

    Just some food for thought.

This should most definitely be an option. Memorizing definitions word for word is not essential. Memorizing correct spelling and punctuation of terms is of relevance. Please make this option available as soon as possible. It does not make sense for it to be absent from the list of features when designing a quiz. Quizlet has this feature by the way.

I concur, I recently started using StudyBlue after using quizlet and when doing quizzes on quizlet you see the definition and must choose the correct term out of four options. I think this is a much better way to do it. I prefer the StudyBlue interface so please add this feature soon!

When i take the quizzes it would be more prudent for the quizzes to have the definitions then the multiple choice are the terms. My professors tests are more definition then look for the term, this is why i feel that it would be necessary to have the same capabilities as the note cards. This is to say that there would be a "switch" per say to switch between term first and definition first.
